The Islamic Education Basics Certificate Program 

for Teachers of full-time Islamic Schools

  

The Fairfax Institute offers teachers an on-line professional development certificate in the basic elements of Islamic Education. 

The Certificate in Islamic Education Basics consists of the folllowing courses:

IEB1

Islamic Principles of Teaching  

IEB2

Teacher as a Muslim Role Model

IEB3

Integrated Curriculum in Muslim Schools 

IEB4

Muslim Character Development 

Each course is taught in ten contact hours spread over five sessions, with one course taught per term (quarter-year). Days and times, frequency of class sessions, and scheduling of courses can be adjusted to accomodate local schools needs. A minimum of five teachers must sign up for the certificate to be offered.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:  

IEB1: Islamic Principles of Teaching:       by Dr. Hakim Rashid

This course will help develop an understanding of teaching and learning in the Islamic tradition, and explore how to benefit from traditional processes of communicating between the teacher and the taught. The course will expound on the role of the teacher and teaching techniques within the context of contemporary culture and Qur’anic and Prophetic views of learning.

IEB2: Teacher as a Muslim Role Model:  

This course will discuss the Muslim approach to teachers and their leading role in the area of moral values. It will explore the need for models that inspire moral and righteous conduct, and the ability and responsibility of teachers to characterize ideas and values through their interaction with others inside and outside the classroom.

IEB3: Integrated Curriculum in Muslim Schools:

This course will deal with the need to integrate fundamental Islamic values and concepts into a comprehensive curriculum. It will discuss possible ways in which major Islamic themes can be incorporated into the content of curriculum in various academic fields, using authentic instructional models that lead to holistic learning and positive experience.

IEB4: Muslim Character Education:

This course will deal with how to develop character by promoting core ethical values through opportunities for students to act morally, be self-motivated, and think, feel and behave in ways that exhibit the desirable Muslim character. It will explore the role of the entire school community in a partnership that models and transmits effective approaches to character development.

  

PROCESS:

The process for this on-line, web-based course is as follows: 

1.The School shall ask qualified teachers to register with TFI online through TFI website www.fairfaxi.net. 

2.The School shall schedule days and times (in consultation with TFI) for registered teachers to meet in an   appropriate facility, when the instructor will teach and interact with learners via a web-based application. 

3. Live class sessions will require one of the following: a. Learners have use of an individual or shared computer with Internet access and speaker and microphone. Webcam is optional. b. The facility has a projector to project the screen on a computer with Internet access, with a speaker to amplify the sound. Webcam is optional.

4. The web-based application allows the instructor and learners to share presentations and documents, as well as communicate via audio, video and text processes. 

5. In addition to live class sessions, TFI will make the presentation material for the course available on its website.

  

FEE:

Tuition fee for each ten-hour course (five sessions of two hours each) is $50 per course per teacher. 

However, financial assistance is available on request.
